Thom Buchanan, muralist/illustrator, exhibit designer
Trained as a combat artist and photographer for the U.S. Army, and as an illustrator in a full-service art studio, Thom understands problem-solving under deadline pressure. For many years he has worked for corporate clients as a visual communication specialist, distilling abstract ideas into meaningful imagery. His skills include the ability to sketch, draw and paint in any traditional media enhanced by a fluency in the latest computer graphic techniques. His portfolio shows an emphasis on designing and creating exhibits, murals and educational art for museums and visitor centers, with a special flair for the creation of imagery that involves and appeals to children. His work appears in visitor facilities that interpret the natural world throughout the West, as well as in zoos, museums, ski areas and schools across the nation and around the world. Thom has also produced illustrations and paintings for advertising, editorial and institutional clients ranging from luxury hotels to Quark, Eurodisney and regional casinos. Thom and EDA graphic designer Jill Haller served as Artists-In-Residence at The Children’s Museum of Denver for a number of years, and he is also the official Tribute Artist for the Denver International Film Festival, creating portraits of filmmakers from around the world.
