Pawnee Buttes/ Crow Valley Recreation Area
Pawnee Buttes/Crow Valley Recreation Area, Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic and Historic Byway, Weld County, CO
The Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic and Historic Byway runs through the ranching and farming country of the South Platte River Valley in northeastern Colorado. This part of the high plains (known as the “Colorado Piedmont”) is much more rugged and varied than the rolling country that surrounds it, and its gullies, escarpments, potholes and buttes are home to a surprising variety of wildlife.
Pawnee National Grassland is considered one of the finest birding destinations in North America, and the geological strata exposed by the action of wind and water contain world-class fossils from several eras.

EDA planned, designed and fabricated panels for two sites as part of this project, which was a cooperative effort among the Byway, Pawnee National Grassland and the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

One set of panels will be installed (Summer 2007) at the Crow Valley Recreation Area, a popular developed camping area located at a wooded creekside site near Briggsdale. Several more panels will be installed at the Pawnee Buttes Overlook, a trailhead with stunning views of the region’s signature landmarks.
Interpretive themes and topics include the history of the Dust Bowl, farming and ranching practices, birds, paleontology and Native American use of the land.
